Our County Supervisor used taxpayer money to advertise a campaign event in Costa Mesa
Our County Supervisor, Michelle Steel (R), recently spent thousands of taxpayer dollars to advertise an event at a residence in Costa Mesa. 16,000 mailers were sent, even though the venue could only accommodate 50 people. No substantive topics were discussed during Supervisor Steel’s brief remarks.
Supervisor Steel has been in office since 2014, but she has not sent such literature until this year (an election year for her). Further details can be read here.
Supervisor Steel’s colleagues publicly criticized her use of public funds for campaign purposes, and one Supervisor accusing her of violating the law. The article can be viewed here.
What makes the use of public funds most shameful is that Supervisor Steel is a well-funded incumbent with hundreds of thousands of her own campaign dollars available to send mailers. There is no need whatsoever for the public to foot the bill and subsidize her re-election campaign with taxpayer money. She got caught with her hand in the cookie jar, and she needs to be held accountable.
